Kathy
Miller is a teacher, professional cellist, and nature photographer.
She spent two years photographing and observing Chippy in her
garden. That series of photographs inspired this book. She
encourages readers to share their stories of chipmunk encounters.
Check out the 'Chipmunk Chatter' section of this website for recent
submissions.
With Bachelor degrees in Education and Music, Miller enjoys doing
interactive school programs that typically include a listening
activity, nature photography tips, the story of Chippy projected on
a screen and a hands-on burrow building simulation.
In addition to the images found in Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the
Garden, Miller’s photographs have been published in various
newspapers and magazines and graced the covers of brochures, Hawk
Mountain News, and the 2009 Schuylkill County Visitors Guide. One of
Miller’s photos was used for the cover of the Yuengling Brewery
Cookbook and she contributed ten images to the book Rescuing
Wildlife (©2009, Stackpole). She won 2nd place in the Schuylkill
Allied Artists Competition in photography.
Using her nature photographs, Miller creates custom postcards and
notecards for local businesses including the Yuengling Brewery,
America's Oldest Brewery. She donates 25 cents from the sale of each
notecard to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
(www.hawkmountain.org), the world’s first refuge for birds of
prey.
Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, Miller now lives in New Ringgold,
Pennsylvania with her husband and a very spoiled indoor cat.
"I hope my book inspires children to spend time outdoors exploring
nature. Photography can be a fun way for kids to discover
interesting things in their own backyard. Their own pictures
can be used to create stories."
